During the mid 1750's, a revolution occurred that changed the ways of life for people around the world. This revolution, called the Industrial Revolution, is still effecting the world to this day. The Industrial Revolution set the stage for an explosion of advancement in the technology of the world, and the overall advancement of the world.
What Caused the Industrial Revolution?
The Industrial Revolution was started mainly because of a few key inventions. These include the seed drill, the steam engine, and the railroad. These inventions changed the very way of life for people living in Britain, and led to changes in other countries, as well as the world.
What Exactly Changed?
There are many ways that the Industrial Revolution changed Britain and the world. Labor changed drastically. Until this time, most clothing was made by many families living in the country, called the Cottage Industry. The merchant would send cotton to one family, who's job it was to change it into thread. After many stops at other cottages, with each family doing something to change the raw material into clothing, the final product would be finished. The problems with this was that it was costly, and not very efficient. With the improvement of the steam engine, factories using power looms could make clothing cheaper and faster. This led to the demise of the Cottage Industry, lessening the income of farmers. The seed drill, also, affected the rural areas more than just improving crop production. As large land owners vied for the best way of crop production, they hit upon the idea of closing off their land to others, so they could test things with no prying eyes. This lead to the Enclosure Movement, which forced may smaller farmers out of their land, and into cities. The factories there, now needing workers, welcomed this new labor force, although there were so many that jobs paid very little, and treated the workers horribly. This movement into the cities led to what is called urbanization; people building and moving into cities. Cities grew, populations increased, and Industrialization spread to different countries, pushing forward the world's technology.
